Hangar 18 Expansion

Hangar 18 Expansion

Born and raised in LA, I was so excited to be project lead for this small affordable Los Angeles gym’s expansion! This was an interesting project, as one that called for interlacing the structure of the new wall with the Old School structure of the existing ones, to maximize space.

Above, the black pad closer to the camera was an existing pad, while the dark grey pad further was the pad flooring my team made. Our pad’s sewn design is cleaner than the existing pad, which appears to be fabric and velcro material simply cut to size. This demonstrates the advantage of me making drawings not only for the Install Crew, but with Sewers producing well tailored flooring.

You can also see where the gym’s old recessed bench interfaces with the new argyle panels of the climbing wall. Preparing what’s visible was easy, as simple as preparing the wood paneling and pad flooring extended, to be cut to size on site. Much more complex was coordinating the steel to be installed inside the network of old steel, without touching the old structure, for liability purposes.
